Review: Pocket Radiology by Compendium

TL;DR review: I really like this tiny radiology booklet and I think it is a refreshing way to know about radiology in this age of apps and websites.

What is Radiology Pocket?

It is a booklet covering essentials of Radiology. It is small

The cases are organised into courses based on subspecialty and modality. Some of them are offered as Classic teaching cases while other cases of varying difficulty level are collected into Practice cases which is meant to simulate a real life reporting list.

Who is it for?

It is aimed at radiologists in training or early career radiologists:

  • Medical students who have started clinical rotations
  • Interns who need a quick reference during their rotations
  • Early residents who want to find out more about a topic at a glance

What did I like about it?

Approach: It has a very clinical approach towards radiology in contrast to the traditional approach in radiology focussed textbooks. It has been designed to be a quick reference to answer common clinical questions without going into a lot of details. Although it prioritises speed and brevity over depth it is still a radiology book and does justice by not forgetting to cover all the modalities and even a section on how to request imaging.

Portability: Almost none of us carry books anymore because we have handy apps and digital notes and carrying a big/heavy book with you during work/rotations is not exactly smart. This book though, at 17 x 12 cm, is small enough to fit into your pocket (hence the name) and almost makes you want to carry it!

Tables and Schematics: Important information organised into tables and schematic ideal for a quick review. You find exactly what you are looking for very quickly.

Images and illustrations: The book has several useful images along with illustrations that cover important anatomical variants and pitfalls of imaging, among other things.

Best feature: How to write imaging requests

An oft neglected part of medicine is teaching medical students and interns how to request imaging. What information should be included and what details need to be highlighted – knowing this is vital in these days where imaging is a common part of any patient’s workup. I was quite happy to see a dedicated section on this!
